Pearl shape classification
Before introducing shapes, we must first introduce the concept of "diameter difference percentage." The pearl grading standard (GB/T18781—2008) stipulates that it is the percentage of the difference between the maximum and minimum diameters to the average diameter. It is calculated as (Φmax - Φmin) / Φaverage × 100%. The shape of a pearl is classified according to this ratio. Φ is the symbol for diameter.
True round pearls are extremely rare. Therefore, we usually categorize common pearl shapes into round/near-round, oval, flat, and baroque.
Round pearls
Perfectly round: This is the most common type of pearl, located at the very top of the pearl tier. Although modern cultured pearl techniques can increase the yield of perfectly round pearls, they are still relatively rare.
Round: Round pearls are the most classic shape, with smooth contours and even luster, giving a harmonious and perfect impression. Without professional instruments, they are almost indistinguishable to the naked eye.
Near-round: Generally round, but slightly flattened at both ends. Multiple near-round pearls can be cleverly set and combined to create a visual effect that is almost perfectly round.
Oval pearls
Oval pearls are loved for their unique shape and soft lines, making them suitable for a variety of occasions.
Teardrop pearls are a type of oval pearl, named for their teardrop shape. They possess the roundness of a pearl, yet have a more delicate, lively quality. In design, teardrop pearls are often used to create pendants and other jewelry, highlighting their flowing lines and beautiful shape.
Flat pearls
Flattened pearls: These pearls are flat on one side, resembling a plump, adorable steamed bun. While flattened pearls may not possess the rounded beauty of round pearls, they can still bring an interesting and novel feel through unique jewelry designs, showcasing a distinctive and modern style. The more regular and symmetrical the shape, the higher the price.
Baroque pearls

Spiral beads: The spiral pattern is actually the growth ring of a pearl. They are characterized by a spiral texture on the surface and are usually oval in shape. Spiral beads with clear textures, strong luster, and relatively smooth surfaces are also favored by some.
Button beads: A type of baroque pearl, named for their relatively flat shape, resembling a clothing button. Like baroque pearls, they have a smooth surface and rich overtones, making them popular among those who value individuality.
Millet pearls: Now, upon closer inspection, these tiny, translucent grains, barely larger than rice grains, suddenly become exceptionally endearing. They are named for their small and delicate size, giving them a refined and playful feel.
The quality of pearls is influenced by many factors besides shape, including luster, size, and the degree of surface blemishes. Pearls with strong luster, larger size, and fewer surface blemishes, even if they have some shape imperfections, are highly sought after in the market and usually command higher prices.
